What replaces oil?

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

This is one of those questions that keeps me up at night. I don’t mean ‘what are the alternatives to oil’ but something far more puzzling…

All these billions of barrels of oil that have been sucked out of the ocean bed and deep beneath the ground must leave holes behind, right?

So what do they fill the holes with?

There… that’s stumped you, hasn’t it?

my question in past weeks has been a humble one: what is behind the universe?oil extracting is interesting thing. as far as i know they replace it with water which is pumped in (so they the same amount of water as oil, which is why some countries cannot pump the oil with full pace and there are oil shortages), but this site says something different:http://science.howstuffworks.com/oil-drilling6.htm

it’s really not that big a deal, the volume of oil, while significant, pales in comparison to the MASSIVE size of the earth’s crust. There is little to any possible effect on the earth from it.There is MORE of a threat from smog and other junk going into our air on the surface from petroleum based pollutants. Although, I won’t say anything for global warming. I’m an environmentalist, but I’m a scientist too, and everyone knows the sun is the cause of 99% of the heat on Earth. The sun just HAPPENS to be at the closest in 200 years so obviously it’s hotter. Not to mention the biggest contributor to CO2, larger than all man-made CO2 (cars, airplanes, ships, power plants) combined is: Cows. Cows put out nearly half the world’s CO2. A ridiculous amount. So should we kill all cows to lower global “heat”? Of course not!The fact is when temperatures rise slightly, there is more LIFE on earth, as more land becomes life-sustaining in the arctics. The Renaissance occured because of a warming period that gave way to farmers growing more crops, having surpluses, allowing people to pay for artists, inventors, and so on.But by all means, go vegetarian and eliminate Cow usage. If you believe in Global Warming, it’s the #1 cause.Methane causes 10x more heating than CO2 and Cows release tons of it.I, while I do eat fish and chicken, do NOT eat beef or pork, so even I can say I’m taking that step as a global warming-skeptical environmentalist.

And there’s an example of someone who doesn’t read the actual post. The rennaissance happened because it was warmer? The sun’s the closest to the Earth it’s ever been?Bonkers. And the whole “well cows cause more global warming than planes and you’re not suggesting we kill cows, are you?” argument has to be the global warming equivalent to the “well Hitler was a vegetarian/believed in global warming/painted/had a moustache” argument.Yes – bonkers.
